Merge tags insert recipient or sender information when an email is prepared for delivery. For example, you can greet a contact by first name without writing a different email for every person.
Use merge tags in the subject or email content when a personalized detail makes the message more relevant. Review them carefully before scheduling so recipients see the intended information.
Add a merge tag
1. Open the left panel in the editor.
2. Select **Tags**.
3. Find the tag you want to use.
4. Select the tag card to copy it.
5. Paste the tag into the subject or an editable content block.
Available merge tags
| Tag | What it inserts | Example |
|---|---|---|
[first_name] | Contact’s first name | John or john |
[last_name] | Contact’s last name | Smith or smith |
[first_name|proper] | Properly capitalized first name | John |
[last_name|proper] | Properly capitalized last name | Smith |
[recipient_email] | Contact’s email address | johnsmith@example.com |
[sender_name] | Agent name or campaign sender name | Jane Doe or jane doe |
[sender_name|proper] | Properly capitalized sender name | Jane Doe |
[email_md5] | Email MD5 value (rarely used) | a1b2c3d4e5f6... |
⚠️ When a contact does not have a [first_name], Dakno uses “Friend” as a fallback. Add |proper to a supported name tag when you want standard capitalization.
Check possible invalid merge tags before scheduling
Make a mistake and get the wrong merge tag?
The scheduling window checks bracketed text in the subject and message. If it finds text that is not a supported tag, it shows Possible Invalid Merge Tags.
If you made a mistake:
- Review each item in the warning.
- Close the scheduling window and correct any misspelled or unsupported tag.
- Open Schedule again.
If the bracketed text is intentional and should be sent exactly as written, type ACCEPT in the Type "ACCEPT" to continue text field.
⚠️ Warning: Accepting the warning does not turn text into personalization. The recipient will see the bracketed text exactly as written.
